Why Has Inequality Increased in China? toward a Theory of International Matching∗

چکیده
It seems entirely fitting to discuss the Chinese economy on this occasion of the opening of the Renmin-Monash Advanced Centre of Economic Studies (ACES). One of the most striking features of that economy is the remarkable pace at which it has grown in the past one or two decades. A real challenge for economists is to account for this extraordinary success story. I think that a potentially significant part of the answer is provided in work by Xiaokai Yang and his coauthors. Yang shows clearly how a finer division of labour, i.e., a higher degree of specialization, can be a powerful engine for economic expansion. Progressive refinement of the division of labour, made possible by reductions in transaction costs (especially, in the Chinese case, reductions in the cost of conducting international trade), creates significant increasing returns, which in turn foster growth. But the conjunction of economic expansion and international trade seems to result in unfortunate side effects, such as rising inequality of income. Indeed, China has experienced a sharp increase in inequality during its recent boom. Yet, it is not at all clear theoretically why inequality should go together with growth in GNP and trade. Given his breadth of interests, it is not surprising that Xiaokai Yang should have studied this problem too, as in his work with Dingsheng Zhang. Yang and Zhang (2003) view an increase in income inequality as the consequence of uneven progression in the division of labour. Although expansion of trade provides the opportunity to specialize, not everyone

ON THE MATCHING NUMBER OF AN UNCERTAIN GRAPH
Uncertain graphs are employed to describe graph models with indeterministicinformation that produced by human beings. This paper aims to study themaximum matching problem in uncertain graphs. The number of edges of a maximum matching in a graph is called matching numberof the graph. Due to the existence of uncertain edges, the matching number of an uncertain graph is essentially an uncertain var...
متن کاملObama’s “Pivot to Asia” Policy (2011- 2016): the Case of China
It has been argued and stated that the 21st century is America's Pacific Century, the century or millennium of Asia, and century or era of China, the inevitable superpower. This paper explains the essence of the new changes when the Pivot Policy was announced by President Obama in 2011. The main question discussed is therefore the following: ‘Why (and how) did President Obama adopt (and impleme...
متن کاملAnalytical Matching of Optimal Damping Characteristics Curve for Vehicle Passive Suspensions
To facilitate the damping matching of dampers for vehicle passive suspensions, this paper proposes an analytical matching method of the optimal piecewise linear damping characteristics curve. Based on the vehicle vibration model, taking the suspension dynamic deflection as the constraint, by the vibration acceleration and the wheel dynamic load, an objective function about the relative damping ...
متن کاملA Study on Ethnic Conflict Potential with an Emphasis on Social Inequality: Case Study of Sistan and Balouchistan Province
This paper investigates the potential for ethnic conflict in Sistan and Balouchistan province with an emphasis on social inequality using document analysis method. Combination of three basic theories of ethnic conflict, namely "security theory", "opportunity theory" and the theory of "oppression" were used simultaneously. The findings show that Sistan and Baluchistan province suffers from mor...
